Manuel Ramírez died on February 25, 1916, leaving no offspring. Following his death in 1916, Modesto Borreguero (1901-1969) planned to open his own workshop, and even had labels printed, but changed his plans after Ramírez’s widow asked him as well as Domingo Esteso (1882-1937) and Santos Hernandez (1873-1943) to continue to work there. The instruments made during this period carry the Vuida de Manuel Ramírez (widow of) label. Domingo Esteso left in 1917 to establish his own workshop, followed by Santos Hernandez in 1919. Santos Hernandez went on to become one of the greatest guitar makers of the first half of the 20th century, Modesto Borreguero continued working for the workshop despite the death of Manuel Ramírez’s widow in 1921, until the business finally closed around 1923. Modesto Borreguero opened his own workshop at calle Duque Fernan Nuñez, 5, Madrid on July 26, 1924.
