Leopold Aschauer SOLD

$15,000

In 1923 Leopold Aschauer became the Director of the Violin-making School in Mittenwald, Germany. His son, Ludwig, later worked in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1950's and 1960's. This 60 year old viola has been well developed in its volume, tone and resonance and is in great condition, no cracks or repairs. Beautiful Spruce Soundboard and Two Piece Highly Flamed Maple Back and Sides. It is fully blocked and lined. The work of the grafted scroll and pegbox area is exquisite. This is an extraordinary instrument, I was holding the 1973 Ernst Heinrich Roth VIIR 16" Viola in my hand while a Mission City Symphony violinist was playing the Aschauer, it made the viola in my hand vibrate.

1955 Leo. Aschauer 16" Viola with Original Lifton Case and Case Cover-as it says on the label it was "Made expressly for William Moennig and Son (Signed) Leo. Aschauer Mittenwald 1955".
