Lob 357 mm. Son of William Tarr who was born in 1808 and died in 1891. William Tarr is well known for instructing his sons and having made over 200 Double Basses and 500 instruments total. William Tarr also had apprentices such as J. W. Briggs and James Cole. Joseph G. Tarr worked at Manchester. England. He had made his 11th violin in 1886 and his 26th violin by 1888. Later he was a resident in New York in 1900. When he arrived in the United States he had as well as his family had a great reputation for restoration besides making violin family instruments. We see that between 1886-1888 he had made 15 violins, but the average was only 5 a year until 1909. It's obvious the time doing repairs and restorations cut into his violin production. He then moved to Huntingdon, PA. in 1912. He died in 1926. Exhibited violins at a Trade Convention in St. Louis in 1914. Excellent Reddish Brown Varnish.
